3 Body Language Tricks That Will Boost Your Career (And Your Love Life)
What you say with your body is just as important as spoken or written communication; your body language can convey a sense of confidence, warmth, or approachability that words can't. As Business Insider Australia points out, an understanding of body language and how you're presenting yourself to the world can greatly impact your dating life, career, and relationships with friends and family. Below, read up on the body language tips BI recommends mastering in order to project kindness, confidence, and sincerity.
Maintain Eye Contact
"People with a shaky gaze often come across as anxious, distracted, or dishonest," writes the business website. "It can be tough to master the skill of maintaining eye contact since it's an uncomfortable and unnatural thing for some people. But it's a practice that can help you immensely in life." Leil Lowndes, communication expert and author of How to Talk to Anyone, adds, "In the Western world, strong eye contact signals honesty, respect, interest, intelligence, candor, and confidence."
Walk With a Purpose
The way you walk into a room (or sit during a meeting) can either project confidence or awkwardness. While changing the way you walk can be difficult, making an effort to stand up tall and hold your head high can "ensure that people don't make snap judgments about your confidence, attractiveness, and trustworthiness," which, according to Scientific American, is commonplace.
Keep Your Hands Visible
If you're nervous or anxious, it's normal to want to cross your arms across your chest or put your hands in your pockets. But as BI points out, those two positions can project a negative image. "It's important to keep your hands visible, lest you look like you're hiding something," BI writes. "Invite people in and allow them to trust you by using more open body language. Avoid positions that make you appear defensive—even if that's how you're feeling."
