Blackberry Basil Whiskey Smash
I love a smash! Who doesn't love a smash? They're… smashing? Well, they're awesome anyway. Some crushed ice, some citrus, a little sugar and whiskey—BOOM. I added some blackberries and basil for a bit of freshness, but you could play around with any other fruit and fresh herb combination.
7 fresh basil leaves
1 lemon half, quartered lengthwise
1 tbsp. simple syrup
2 oz. bourbon
Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, mash fresh basil leaves, lemon half, blackberries, and simple syrup in a mixing glass or a cocktail shaker four to five times, just to release juices and oils. Add bourbon. Transfer to an old-fashioned glass. Fill halfway with crushed ice, stir, and then mound more crushed ice on top. Garnish with basil sprigs.
